about the artist
Noel Soucy is a self-taught painter based in York, Maine. Working in acrylic and oil on canvas, she creates contemporary abstract landscapes inspired by the shifting light, atmosphere, and quiet beauty of the Maine coast.
Her time exploring Midcoast Maine informs both the mood and movement of her work. Each painting begins with a feeling or memory and evolves organically in the studio as Soucy builds layers of color and texture. Using palette knives, brushes, and marks carved into the surface, she develops atmospheric compositions where the essence of a landscape gradually emerges.
Soucy is an exhibiting member of the Seacoast Artist Association, Loading Dock Gallery, and Kittery Art Association. She paints from her studio in York, Maine, and also works from her studio at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, Massachusetts, where her work can be viewed during open studio events.
Artist Statement
My subject matter is nature, whether it is a traditional landscape, a flower, a bird, or a bear painting. I use a palette knife and brush on canvas to capture movement, texture, and depth in each piece.
My art is a piece of me. It tells the story of where I’ve been and what I’m feeling or thinking in the moment as I create from memory and imagination.
Whether I’m painting an atmospheric landscape or an animal from nature, I create with joy and peace. I hope that those who view my work can feel that emotion in the painting.
